Left-turning lorries pose accident threat to cyclists

The threat posed to cyclists by lorries making left turns has been highlighted in a series of recent accidents, such as the one that killed Emma Foa last December. Yet new EU rules requiring lorries to have wide-vision mirrors do not come into force until 2009.

So Islington MP Emily Thornberry is right to demand that the regulations be brought forward - and to suggest that the Olympic Delivery Authority should reward those firms who have already fitted the mirrors. If only these firms were given work on the vast building contracts, it would send a clear signal about the importance of this safety measure - and perhaps save the lives of a few London cyclists.
