Legal eagles most likely to flout laws of the road

Judges, magistrates and lawyers are Britain's most lawless drivers, according to new statistics published today.

Analysis of 1.6 million motor insurance policies revealed that one in five members of the legal professions has driving licence penalty points — more than twice as many as hairdressers and beauticians, who have the fewest blemishes on their records.

Those working in the medical profession are the second most likely to flout the laws of the road followed by religious leaders and police officers.

The surprising results are based on checks by insurance giant Admiral of motor policies taken out last year.

Penalty points remain on licences for three years. Applicants are also under an obligation to disclose any motoring convictions in the previous five years.

The list of motoring offences ranged from using a vehicle with a bald tyre to causing death by dangerous driving but the majority of penalties divulged relate to speeding, ignoring traffic lights or using a phone while driving.

Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn said: "You would think that working in the field of law they would be keen not to break any driving rules themselves."
