Levy has gone on record for the first time to confirm that Jol spoke to other clubs, who are believed to be Newcastle and Ajax, while he was in charge of Spurs.

Jol had the sympathy of the fans when he was fired last month and Juande Ramos, who the club first approached in August, took over just two days later.

The 51-year-old felt he was undermined the moment club officials went to the meeting in Seville, but Levy said: "People say I should apologise, but I don't hear anyone talking about Martin going for two jobs while he was here. No-one has had a go at him. Have I got an apology?

"We are in the football business and I completely understand that he went to talk to club X while he was still here, that's just the way it is."

Levy also couldn't guarantee that striker Dimitar Berbatov would not leave the club in January.
