Libel case victory for MP Jones

Labour MP Martyn Jones won £5,000 libel damages over a claim that he swore at a young Westminster security guard who asked to see his Commons pass.

On May 14, 2006, The Mail on Sunday said Mr Jones, the Member for Clwyd South for 20 years, had told the guard to f*** off and faced discipline from the Labour Whip and the Commons Speaker.

In the High Court, Mr Jones admitted saying: "I don't give a s*** what you are. You should know who Members of Parliament are."

But he said he had apologised afterwards and shown his pass.

His QC, Ronald Thwaites, said the article contained several untruths and was an attack on a hard-working conscientious politician.

Security guard Chris Ham, 20, told the court he had been left "shocked and flustered" after Mr Jones told him to f*** off twice.

The newspaper's QC Bernard Livesey said even on Mr Jones's account of events, the MP had verbally abused Mr Ham.

The jury, by a majority verdict, awarded £5,000 damages for the article and a follow-up which called Mr Jones "ludicrous".

The newspaper was also ordered to pay costs.
