A pilot scheme in Lewisham has already begun lending smart meters to residents for three-week periods.

The meters tell users via a wireless display exactly how much electricity a household is using at any time.

It is hoped they will show residents how simple changes such as leaving off lights can impact electricity bills.

The scheme may now be expanded to create an "eco education" area in all London libraries.

The areas would contain advice on how to save money, and display popular eco products.

"Energy display devices could save the average London household up to £60 a year from their electricity bills," said London Assembly member Darren Johnson, who led the Lewisham scheme.

Today he called for the Mayor to extend the scheme across London.

"This simple measure can go a long way to cut costs and carbon emissions.

"In the trial we found that after a week or two, people can clearly see how much electricity they are using, and make the necessary changes to reduce it.

"People have found them incredibly useful, and I think every Londoner should have the chance to use one."

The meters consist of a "reader" which clamps over the main electricity supply cable, and a display unit. It updates constantly, and can monitor small changes.
