Lifeguard is convicted of strangling lover

A lifeguard who strangled a mother of four and dumped her body in the boot of her Mercedes faced a life sentence at the Old Bailey today.

Westley Ibe, 28, killed businesswoman Janet Hossain during a row at his home in east London.

The body of Miss Hossain, 32, was found five days later in her silver Mercedes C180 at Tilbury railway station in April last year.

Ibe tried to fool relatives and police by creating a fake trail of phone calls. But he confessed to another woman he was having a relationship with and she informed the police.

Miss Hossain, who had been in a relationship with Ibe for two years, left her children asleep to go to his Canning Town flat.

During an argument he grabbed her around the throat or used a soft ligature to throttle her, the court heard.

Ibe admitted killing his victim but denied murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility, saying he was suffering from a personality disorder caused by head injuries in a car crash when he was 18 in 1998.

The court heard that Miss Hossain told friends she was "so in love" but Ibe rarely reciprocated and she used to agonise about his treatment of her.
