London fare dodgers will be fined £50

Public transport fare evasion penalties in London are to soar from £20 to £50 in the new year, it was announced today.

The increase for offenders on buses, Tubes, the Docklands Light Railway and London main line services will apply from 11 January. Transport for London is also introducing an early-payment incentive, which will mean those who pay in 21 days will only be fined £25.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: "Fare evasion costs Londoners £70 million a year. We are investing record amounts in renewing the network. It is only fair that those who travel on the Tube or bus pay their way."
