London surgeon heads emergency clinic in Haiti

A London trauma doctor who has worked in the world's worst war zones has flown to Haiti to head a surgical team.

Dr David Nott, 53, a vascular surgeon from Chelsea and Westminster hospital, will spend three weeks in Port-au-Prince with Médecins Sans Frontières.

The consultant hit the headlines two years ago when he followed text message instructions to perform a life-saving operation in war-torn Congo on a 16-year-old boy who had lost his arm.

MSF have asked Dr Nott, who is a keyhole surgery expert, to lead a team of doctors at a 100-bed inflatable hospital. They will deal with fractures, amputations, abdominal work and neck and chest problems.

Dr Nott has 14 years' experience in disaster areas and spends several months a year in war zones. He said plastic surgery such as skin grafts would be vital for victims of the Haiti earthquake and that children would be a priority.

"If one person in an incident is killed then the reality is another two or three more will be injured."
