London worst hit for measles

London is still in the grip of a measles outbreak, figures confirmed today.

There have been 257 cases across the capital - making up 70 per cent of the total for England and Wales - so far this year, the latest data from the Health Protection Agency shows.

The disease was reported in nurseries, schools and hospitals, as well as among traveller communities and extended families. Children between one and four, with 56 reported cases, are in the worst-affected group.

The percentage of children in Britain who have had the MMR vaccine is around 85 per cent, but in London the figure is 10 per cent lower.
