Residents' fears for History Museum's lawn

Residents today attacked plans that they fear will see part of the Natural History Museum's lawns paved over.

The museum wants to extend the use of the East Lawn for paid exhibitions and functions.

But conservation and residents' groups, including the Kensington Society, warned that Kensington and Chelsea council's new planning strategy, which was signed off yesterday, will mean that the lawn will be out-of-bounds year-round and left in a "muddy mess".

They are most concerned that the council has refused to rule out paving over some of the grass.

But the council defended the new strategy, saying it would give residents a better idea about what events would be allowed on the lawn.

Neil Greenwood, the museum's director of corporate services, said: "We work closely with the council to obtain planning permission for all of our outdoor exhibitions ... and landscaping the east lawn is not an active application."
