High-society London now has a buying power not seen for more than 70 years
While the incomes of the top 1 per cent have grown considerably, it is the incomes of the top 0.1 per cent that have increased the most dramatically.
In 2003-04, income tax records showed that 19,000 had an annual income in excess of £500,000. This financial year however, that figure stands at 30,000.
16 years ago, an income of £57,000 put an earner among London's top 1 per cent. By 2004-05 however, this had doubled to more than £117,00.
As most of the highest earners are based in London and the wider-south east, high-society London now has a buying power not seen for more than 70 years.
The figures also explain the growth of new businesses and the adaptation of old ones in pursuit of the "platinum pound".
