Long to reign over us: the Queen is set to become Britain's oldest monarch

This Saturday the Queen will quietly mark a significant royal milestone as she becomes the oldest monarch in the history of the nation.

Queen Elizabeth II, who will be 82 in April, will have outlived her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria who was the second oldest monarch since the Norman invasion in 1066.

She will spend the day at Windsor Castle with the Duke of Edinburgh and there will be no public pronouncements.

Her Majesty was born on April 21st, 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in London. She is the fourth longest serving monarch but will become the longest reigning in eight years time. This would make Prince Charles, who is 59, the oldest heir to the throne.

Her cousin Margaret Rhodes believes the octogenarian royal will never abdicate. "When she took her Coronation vow all those years ago, she promised to serve her country whether her life be long or short," Ms Rhodes said.

"As we have seen, her life is proving to be very long, healthy and productive.

"It is not a responsibility she will ever - if at all - give up lightly. I am sure that she will never abdicate."

And with the Queen Mother living to 101, the Queen looks set to break yet another royal record in 2015.

Although now in her eighties, the Queen continues to carry out about 450 engagements each year and splits her time between Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Since 1952 she has conferred 387,700 honours and awards and continues to personally hold regular Investitures.

"She has phenomenal energy and her determination to continue is second to none," senior courtiers told the Daily Mail.

The Queen has passed a number of milestones during her reign. Last year she became the first monarch to celebrate a diamond wedding ceremony. In 2002 she was the oldest monarch to mark a Golden Jubilee and she is also the first to have a Prime Minister born during her reign.
