Lord Bath, his gold BMW and a run-in with the law

A shocked Marquess of Bath surveys the scene after a road crash in which his BMW struck a pedestrian at a zebra crossing in Central London.

The accident, which left a 27-year-old man in hospital with head injuries, happened at lunchtime on Friday. Eyewitness Nina Smith, 36, whose flat overlooks the scene, said: "I was in my study when a car screeched to a stop followed by a loud thud.

"I ran to the window and saw a gold and black BMW up on the pavement with a man who had apparently been hit by it lying on the floor nearby.

"I dashed outside and saw blood pouring out of the man's head, so I went back to get a towel for him. Then I held his hand as he lay convulsing next to me. It was awful. Thankfully the paramedics arrived soon afterwards.

"It was then that I looked up and saw the Marquess of Bath. He was standing next to a belisha beacon which had been absolutely flattened by his car."

Police later breath-tested the 75-year-old aristocrat. He was driven away by officers but a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said he had not been arrested.

"The driver stopped at the scene and is fully co-operating with police," she said. "Inquiries are continuing to establish the cause of the incident."

Lord Bath, who was born Alexander Thynn, owns Longleat Estate in Wiltshire where TV series such as Lion Country and BBC1's Animal Park have been filmed.

He has also attracted considerable publicity over his personal life. He has boasted of having 75 lovers, dubbed "wifelets", despite his 38-year marriage to former actress Anna Gael.

She was with him at the time of the accident, along with their golden labrador, Boudicca.

Yesterday Lord Bath was recuperating at Longleat, the Elizabethan estate which has been owned by his family for five centuries.

Asked about the crash, he replied: "It was a very frightening experience." On hearing that the pedestrian was not as seriously injured as first thought, he said: "That is a very great relief to me."

Last night the injured man was in a stable condition at Charing Cross hospital in West London.
