Lord Rogers was dismissed from the £3billion project in June, following an intervention by Prince Charles, who urged the Qatari owners to change the "insensitive and unsuitable" design.

The architect claims he is owed money for work that his firm, Rogers, Stirk, Harbour and Partners, did between February and June.

Had the scheme gone ahead, the firm would have been paid a further £2million.

A letter dated 14 October gave Qatari Diar - the development arm of the Qatari royal family - 14 days to pay.

A shortlist of three firms with new plans for the site will be announced within the next three weeks.
