Madeleine: Eight possible sightings of her in just two days

Detectives in Malta are following up a flurry of reports from people who think they have seen missing Madeleine McCann on the island.

Malta Police said they have received eight fresh reports in the past two days from people claiming to have seen the four-year-old, from Rothley, Leicestershire.

One of the possible sightings was that the little girl was in a hotel room - which was quickly investigated by police - but confirmed not to be Madeleine.

Other reports include a blonde tot wearing a black wig, a little girl in a pushchair and someone who looks like Madeleine on a ferry.

The reports follow a wave of possible sightings of girls matching Madeleine's description across the island.

They follow similar reports from across Europe, North Africa and beyond, amid an unprecedented international publicity campaign to raise Madeleine's profile.

Police are investigating new sightings of missing Madeleine McCann

The latest clutch includes a possible sighting by a Maltese woman who reported seeing a girl resembling Madeleine on the Gozo ferry on June 20.

In another report, a woman said her partner saw a "lookalike" of the youngster entering a private residence in Mellieha accompanied by a female at around 7.45am on either June 20 or 21.

Meanwhile, a British woman told police she had seen a girl who looked like Madeleine at Qawra.

In a fourth report, a man claimed to have seen a child resembling Madeleine in a pushchair at the B'Kara open market sometime during the morning of June 20.

He said the girl was accompanied by three women dressed in Muslim attire who were pushing three pushchairs.

There was also a report from a woman who saw a blonde girl wearing a black wig at a supermarket in Sliema on June 15.

Another woman told police she sat near a foreign woman accompanying a girl who looked "very much" like Madeleine on a bus heading towards Bugibba from Valetta.

And an anonymous person reported seeing a girl resembling the missing youngster in Vittoriosa about three weeks ago. The child was with two women.

In the last report, a person informed the police that Madeleine was in a hotel room on Qawra.

Officers were immediately sent to the hotel, but later confirmed that the youngster was not Madeleine.

It is now more than 50 days since Madeleine was snatched from her bed in their holiday apartment in Praia Da Luz, Portugal.

Her parents, Gerry and Kate, have remained in the Algarve, spearheading an extraordinary campaign to get her back.

Spurred by their Catholic faith and messages of support from around the world, they continue to believe she is alive and are determined to stay in Portugal driving their campaign.
