Make Lord Ashcroft’s tax status public, watchdog rules

01 February 2010
Christopher Graham gave the Cabinet Office 35 days to release full details of the undertaking Lord Ashcroft gave concerning his tax status when he was made a Conservative peer in 2000.
It follows a freedom of information request understood to be from Labour MP Gordon Prentice.
Lord Ashcroft, a Tory donor, was required to give an undertaking that he would be resident in the UK for tax purposes. But following his ennoblement he has refused to comment on his tax status, citing privacy.
He is reported still to have major business interests in Belize.
Mr Graham criticised senior politicians for making "evasive and obfuscatory" comments. Mr Cameron has consistently refused to answer questions about the peer's tax status.
A Conservative spokesman said: "This is a matter for the Cabinet Office."
