The child is believed to have been playing with his father in Hayes when the gun went off on Saturday.
He was taken to hospital but has been released. A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.
Neighbours today told how they heard shots being fired "for hours".
One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "I could hear airgun shots going off for hours on Saturday morning.
"I was in my back garden mowing the lawn and the sound was coming from the house. Then, in the afternoon, the first I knew the little boy had been shot was when loads of police turned up."
The parents are believed to have three or four young children.
The neighbour added: "I know the mum does not work because she has loads of young kids.
"The dad goes in and out of the house a lot but I don't know if he has a job."
