Man hanged himself with his tie over bankruptcy

A businessman hanged himself with his tie fastened to a rail in a London hotel because he was about to go bankrupt, an inquest heard today.

Edward Fairless, 66, who had interests in casinos including the Crystal Rooms arcade in Leicester Square, was found in his fifth-floor room in the St Martin's Lane Hotel near Trafalgar Square on18 June. He had barricaded himself in.

Mr Fairless also had tenpin bowling businesses in Spain, where he lived, and owned a home in Barbados. The father of two, who was known as Eddie, had been making frequent trips to London over his financial affairs, Westminster coroner's court heard.

On the morning of his death he sent a text message to his son, also called Eddie. Within an hour his son found his father dead. Recording a verdict that he killed himself, deputy coroner Shirley Radcliffe said: "He was obviously suffering extreme financial difficulty."
