Rauf Yesibulat, 48, claims staff failed to treat his injury properly and wants at least £300,000 in damages.
The Cypriot's medical problems began in 2005 when he suffered a fractured spine.
A writ lodged at the High Court states he was treated at King's College Hospital for the injury but six months later a friend slapped him on the back, leaving him in intense pain.
He was taken to Lewisham hospital but found it hard to explain his symptoms to doctors because of his limited English.
He was prescribed painkillers and discharged, but returned the same day because of the pain only to be discharged again and told, via his sister, there was nothing wrong with him. He was rushed back that night unable to move his arms and legs.
He was transferred to King's College for a scan, which showed his spinal cord was being compressed.
Despite having surgery, Mr Yesibulat, from Lewisham, was left a quadraplegic and is now confined to a wheelchair. Lewisham hospital said it wouldn't comment on an active case.
