A young man was shot dead just streets away from where a teenager was gunned down earlier this month, police said today.

Police were called to Penrose Street in Southwark at 2.45am where they found the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death follows the shooting of 18-year-old Ryan Bravo on August 6 who was attacked as he entered a Costcutters store in Walworth, just a few streets away from Penrose Street.

His death is thought to have been a case of mistaken identity and while police said that his death was not thought to be linked to this morning's shooting, they are not ruling out any possibilities.

DCI Tony Boughton said: 'The area is near a very busy part of south east London. A large number of bus routes use Walworth Road and it contains many fast food outlets.

'I am appealing for anyone who was in the area around 2.30am to 2.45am, or even before that time, and may have seen or heard anything suspicious.'

Anyone with any information should call the incident room on 020 8247 4553, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously.
