Man shot in stomach after telling girl yobs not to wake his baby daughter

A father was shot after confronting two rowdy teenage girls who he feared would wake up his newborn baby.

Barry Simpson, 33, chased the teenagers off but was shot 10 minutes later at point-blank range outside his girlfriend's home in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, according to reports today.

He is now said to be stable in hospital after emergency surgery for stomach wounds.

Mr Simpson and girlfriend Sharon Bryson, 31, became concerned for seven-week-old baby Emma after a disturbance late on Monday night.

The teenagers threatened Mr Simpson as he chased them away.

On hearing a second noise outside the flat 10 minutes later, he again went out. He was confronted by a man carrying what he thought was a knife - but as he turned to flee he was shot.

Mr Simpson's brother Gavin, 39, said: "I ran round to Sharon's flat when she called. Barry was on the kitchen floor and there was blood all over the place.

"He'd been shot on the left side of the abdomen. I couldn't believe it - my brother wouldn't harm a fly and lives for his family and playing golf."

He is now recovering in Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride.

Strathclyde Police confirmed that a 33-year-old man had received gunshot wounds following a disturbance in Ballantrae Road, Blantyre at around 9pm on Monday.

Detectives are treating the case as attempted murder.

The suspect is described as white, about 5ft 9in tall and slim with long black hair and a beard. He was wearing a white tracksuit.

Detective Inspector Ricky Sharp said: "Officers are currently carrying out house-to-house enquiries and studying CCTV footage."
