He smashed the glass of the rear doors, jumped inside and attacked a male passenger. Police today released these CCTV images of the man.
The attack took place at about 3am when the N2 route bus was stationary at a stop in South Lambeth Road, Stockwell.
Police believe the attacker had been involved in a row earlier with a passenger on the bus.
He is described as white, with short dark hair, wearing a dark V-neck top and light-coloured trousers. Witnesses say he spoke with a foreign accent.
Detective Constable Andy Barnard, of the joint Met Police and Transport for London's Workplace Violence Unit, said: "This man caused the driver and passengers to fear for their safety.
"We suspect there were a number of people in the area at the time so I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident to help us with our inquiries."
The attack comes after another in south London in which a man smashed his way through the rear doors of a bus. He was nicknamed the Peckham Terminator in a YouTube video after he was filmed by two youths on mobile phones hurling racist abuse at passengers.
A 26-year-old man was later arrested for public order and criminal damage offences and was bailed pending further inquiries. Anyone with information on the attack in Stockwell on Sunday March 21 should call Dc Barnard on 020 3054 5406 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
