The Business Secretary and former arch-rival to Mr Brown is said to be giving him one-to-one advice ahead of the key Commons clash between the party leaders on Wednesday. "Peter plays the aggressive interrogator demanding answers," a source told the Daily Mail. "He manages to get himself into the skin of Cameron with some aplomb."

Lord Mandelson, who was famed for reforming Labour's communications ahead of the 1997 election, is said to offer Mr Brown a "clinical and forensic" insight into how to take on Mr Cameron. But the revelations have been scorned by senior Tories. Former party leader Michael Howard said: "The Prime Minister who said he would put an end to spin is now kissing the feet of the master of spin."
