Mark Thatcher accused by coup plotter

Old Etonian mercenary Simon Mann is writing a book in jail which is expected to accuse his friend Sir Mark Thatcher of betraying him.

Mann is nearing the end of a four-year term in Zimbabwe for weapons offences linked to a botched coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea.

Simon Mann was charged with firearms offences three years ago

The West African dictatorship wants to extradite him and put him on trial for his life.

Mann, 53, is furious at the role he believes Lady Thatcher's son played in his downfall, says his lawyer.

As part of a plea bargain in South Africa, where he was accused of being part of the plot to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, 53-year-old Sir Mark admitted leasing a helicopter for Mann, knowing it was to be used in the coup bid.

Mann's lawyer Jonathan Samukange said: "Simon was not amused. He never discussed it with Mark and there was no basis for him to come to that conclusion."

Sir Mark's confession, which led to him receiving a suspended jail sentence, will be used against Mann in a Harare extradition hearing on Friday.
