Married head of sixth form 'seduced pupil and gave her cocaine'

A married teacher seduced an infatuated pupil after taking part in a drinking game with her in a hotel room, a court has heard.

Andrew Riley, who was head of sixth form at the girl's school, kissed the 17-year-old while the pair shared shots of the Italian spirit Sambuca, it was claimed.

It was the beginning of an affair during which they exchanged explicit messages and met up for sex fuelled by cocaine and champagne, Preston Crown Court heard.

Accused: Teacher Andrew Riley denies having sex with a sixth form pupil

Riley, 36, is accused of sexual activity with a child, abuse of trust and offering to supply class A drugs.

The married father of two was the £36,000-a-year head of sixth form at Baines School in Poultonle-Fylde, Lancashire.

In the summer of 2005 the girl was in her final term of A-levels and 'worshipped' Riley.

Dennis Watson, prosecuting, said: "She was attracted to him, and she being young and attractive was attractive to him. There was contact out of school by email, text and internet messaging."

On May 27 the girl and her friends were joined by staff at their leavers' ball at a Blackpool hotel and afterwards she and Riley ended up in the same room.

"The girl had had a lot to drink and the defendant had had a lot to drink," said Mr Watson.

"At the end of the evening there was a drinking game involving taking a shot of Sambuca."

"They took half a shot and then passed it mouth-to-mouth to the next person and there was a three-second rule."

"That was the amount of time you have to pass the alcohol so nothing untoward happened."

"The defendant spent far longer than was necessary to pass the Sambuca from his mouth to the girl's. This was the first time there was any sexual contact."

Riley asked to pass Sambuca into her mouth for a second time and this time they kissed for about 30 seconds, the court heard.

"It was minor sexual contact but the defendant crossed the line," said Mr Watson.

They exchanged intimate messages and the following month Riley arranged for them to spend the night together at a hotel in Manchester, said Mr Watson.

In one message Riley wrote: "You are intelligent, beautiful and damn sexy and you are the first person to make me feel alive for a long time."

Before they met up at the hotel, Riley told her that he had put a "coke order in".

Mr Watson said they spent the night together on June 29 and after spending £500 on the room, champagne and cocaine, they had sex.

The following month Riley allegedly sent her a message asking: "Do you want more coke?"

In another he said: "There is more people at stake - there is my career, family, the lot. This is a big deal."

They continued seeing each other into the autumn, going on a trip to the Lake District together, but drifted apart when she went to university.

But she saved the messages Riley had sent her and the following year she contacted her old school to reveal what she said happened, claiming she did not want another pupil to be seduced in the same way.

The girl, now aged 20, began giving evidence yesterday.

Riley, of Lancaster, denies two offences of sexual activity with a child, two offences of abuse of trust and one offence of offering to supply cocaine.

The trial continues.
