Ken Livingstone catches up with the 'horror story' of his likely mayoral rival Boris Johnson
The mayor is halfway though Andrew Gimson's book, Boris
He expects to face Mr Johnson in next May's battle for City Hall after the MP for Henley was shortlisted by Conservative chiefs with three other candidates.
Mr Johnson has, meanwhile, been attacked by a Tory rival for vagueness.
Warwick Lightfoot, a Kensington and Chelsea councillor and former adviser to three Chancellors, said Londoners would not back Mr Johnson, 43, if he failed to prove he could tackle crises such as the collapse of Tube maintenance firm Metronet.
Mr Lightfoot said: "What Boris brings to this event is a lot of profile and a lot of fizz and a natural sense of fun. What Londoners are going to want is someone who convinces that they can run London.
"A strapline for London of 'I haven't a clue' isn't a convincing answer to questions about what to do with Metronet or how to improve the finances of the Met police."
The other two Tory candidates are another Kensington and Chelsea councillor, Victoria Borwick, and Hackney activist and publisher Andrew Boff.
Exact rules on the primary contest in which all London electors can vote will be explained today. The winner is expected to be announced at the end of September, prior to the party conference in Blackpool.
Mr Boff urged party members not to join the "Boris bandwagon".
He said: "Boris is the media favourite. I would suggest to Conservatives that we shouldn't choose who the media tell us to, but the person who they feel is the modern face of the Conservative party in London."
