Mayor wants cyclists' photos of strange but beautiful city

Boris Johnson and Transport for London today launched a photography competition which urges Londoners to get on their bikes and discover the city.

The contest aims to build up a library of unusual images taken by people cycling around the capital.

Entered photos will be posted on TfL's cycling website, aimed at everyone from new riders to regular commuters.

Launching the competition, the Mayor said: "London is a beautiful city with a wealth of unique sights tucked away in the most unusual of places. Cycling is a fantastic way of navigating these city spaces and I hope this competition will encourage even more people to take to two wheels and start exploring."

The competition will be judged by a panel including Kerstin Hacker, a lecturer, photojournalist and author, Koy Thomson, chief executive of the London Cycling Campaign, and Peter McBride, head of cycling, walking and accessibility at TfL.

Entries will be judged on originality, relevance to the cycling theme and overall quality.

Ms Hacker said: "I love London for its diversity, its obvious beauty but also its wealth of undiscovered sights. It lends itself perfectly to photography."

Entries should be submitted by midnight on 3 September via TfL's website with up to 50 words explaining where it was taken and any story behind it.

Contestants can enter as many photos as they wish but there is only one prize per person.

There are eight prizes on offer, one for the best photograph taken in eight areas of London.

One overall winner will receive £400 in Evans Cycles vouchers and £200 in Jessops photography vouchers. Seven runners-up will each receive £200 in Evans Cycles vouchers.
