Boris gives west Londoners a say on C-charge

Boris Johnson today launched a consultation on the future of the western extension of the congestion charge zone.

The announcement fulfilled one of the Mayor's key manifesto pledges and gives Londoners five weeks to have their say.

Although scrapping the scheme entirely is not a proposal, the charge could be abolished during the middle of the day, making it cheaper for businesses to operate

Mr Johnson said he would ask Londoners about the best options for the zone, which was extended to cover parts of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster. The consultation will be open to residents, businesses and stakeholders.

Mr Johnson said: "I have the utmost respect for the opinions of Londoners and I hope that thousands will take part. I remain to be persuaded on exactly what we should do ."

Possible changes include:

Making the congestion charge easier to pay by introducing accounts for motorists.

Introducing a charge-free period in the middle of the day in the western extension.

Increasing the residents' discount to 100 per cent (this would apply to the extension and original charging zone).

Anyone wishing to take part can fill in an online form or call TfL for a copy. If the Mayor decides to make significant changes there would be another 12-week consultation.
