BORN: 19 June 1964, New York

EDUCATION: Primary school in Camden, scholarship boy at Eton, university at Oxford where he was a member of the infamous Bullingdon Club.

CAREER: A week as a management consultant before moving into journalism, where he worked for papers including The Times and Daily Telegraph, for which he was Brussels correspondent. He was editor of The Spectator for six years.

POLITICAL CAREER: Fought Clwyd South in 1997 and was elected for Henley in 2001. Made name for himself on Have I Got News For You and by writing several books. Held shadow posts including vice chairman and higher education, but was sacked by Michael Howard as Tory arts spokesman for lying about an affair.

FAMILY: Lives with wife Marina and four children in north London.

HOBBIES: A passionate cyclist, he also enjoys painting and playing tennis.
