'Build a new Tube line to cope with HS2 crowds'
18 January 2012
BORIS JOHNSON will demand the Government funds a new Tube line if he is to back fully the high-speed rail project.
The Mayor today risked a row with ministers over the £32billion link, saying he was "far from happy" with current plans.
The HS2 scheme got the go-ahead last week after protesters were promised extra tunnelling for the line in Ruislip. From 2026, trains doing 225mph will slash London-to-Birmingham trips to 49 minutes.
Mr Johnson, who says he will press for funding for a new north-south Crossrail line, said: "You cannot possibly go ahead with HS2 unless you have a plan for alleviating the massive congestion at Euston and that means another Tube line."
