Cameron: Arrogant Ken is siding with extremists

Tory leader David Cameron has accused Mayor Ken Livingstone of siding with extremists.

He weighed into the London mayoral battle with an attack on Mr Livingstone for giving a platform to supporters of Middle East terrorism while 'insulting' Jews.

"He has repeatedly acted in a completely arrogant, dangerous and divisive way. In the 1980s he invited IRA apologists to County Hall. Today, he plays host to Yusuf al-Qaradawi and publicly embraces him.

"And through all of this his attitude to British Jews has bordered on the dismissive and insulting."

Mr Cameron, speaking to the Community Security Trust last night, called on voters to 'rise up as one' regardless of their faith to kick out Mr Livingstone, who is standing for re-election on 1 May.

His intervention comes days after a trio of Labour Cabinet ministers launched concerted attacks on Boris Johnson, the Tory candidate for Mayor.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls said Mr Johnson was not fit to run London. Olympics minister Tessa Jowell attacked his views on global warming and Communities Secretary Hazel Blears highlighted his friendship with Conrad Black.

The attacks were launched at Labour's spring conference, used by the party as a launchpad for the elections. Mr Livingstone was guest of honour and used his speech to brand his Tory rival 'George W Boris'.

A recent poll put Mr Johnson ahead for the first time but analysts in both main parties think the contest is wide open.

Gordon Brown is planning to support Mr Livingstone's campaign more prominently in weeks to come. The pair famously fell out during the Eighties but have been on good terms since last year.
