Cameron invites Games chiefs to Westminster

Conservative leader David Cameron will hold talks for the first time with the International Olympic Committee tomorrow.

Mr Cameron will host a meeting in Westminster with senior figures from the IOC's inspection team, who today begin a three-day visit to monitor progress on Games.

The talks come as polls suggest that Mr Cameron could be Prime Minister in the crucial years leading up to the 2012 Olympics.

Mr Cameron called the meeting with the IOC as he does not plan to travel to the Beijing Olympics, but will instead attend the handover celebrations in Britain.

Top of his agenda will be scrutiny of the Games budget and how to deliver a nationwide sports legacy, focusing on boosting participation.

Tory influence on the Games has already been enhanced after Mayor Boris Johnson took his place on the Olympic board last week.

Mr Cameron's guests will be the IOC's executive director Gilbert Felli, chair of the inspection team Denis Oswald and Paul Deighton, chief executive of the 2012 organising committee, Locog.

The Mayor was meeting the IOC for the first time today to brief them on plans to transform the Olympic Park after the Games.

The IOC team were then due to visit Wembley stadium. A day of briefings tomorrow will be followed on Thursday by a visit to the Olympic Park in Stratford.
