Election Diary

MAN IN THE NEWS

Tony Arbour

THE Tory Assembly member for London South West faces a strong Liberal Democrat challenge for his seat today. But his bid for re-election has been marred by a row over a campaign leaflet picturing a police chief conducting "Operation Lockout", an antiburglary campaign. Met election protocols warn police vehicles and staff should "not be exploited for political purposes". It appears Mr Arbour has been advised to pulp thousands of the leaflets following a complaint. Lib-Dem opponent Stephen Knight could be the beneficiary of the cockup. Ken Livingstone has recommended the seat's 25,000 Labour voters back Mr Knight after admitting his party has "no chance" of winning there. Will Mr Arbour hang on?

CAMPAIGN CAPERS

BORIS JOHNSON gave up booze last year when it was suggested that abstaining would help him avoid campaign gaffes. Seven months on, he insists he hasn't touched a drop. Now we hear that when the polls close tonight, he'll be cracking open a bottle. Hope City Hall, where the results are declared tomorrow, has a good supply of Alka-Seltzer.

Yesterday's diary should have said Peregrine Worsthorne was writing for The First Post website.
