Ken says Boris has 'completely failed' on London housing
13 December 2011
A war of words erupted between Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone today over housing, as the Labour candidate unveiled plans for a London-wide lettings agency and US-style rent control to cope with the homes shortage.
Mr Livingstone said he would set up a non-profit lettings agency if he is elected, in a bid to squeeze out "rogue landlords" who prey on low-income tenants. He also said he would cap private-sector rents to prevent landlords demanding artificially high prices by introducing a London Living Rent.
It comes as the Mayor today pledged to build 55,000 affordable homes by 2015. Mr Johnson said his ambitious scheme would also create more than 100,000 jobs and "cement London's housing future". He revealed that 95,000 affordable homes would be built by the end of his second term as Mayor, using £3 billion secured from the Government this year. Mr Johnson insisted he was on course to meet his target of building 50,000 affordable homes by the election next year.
But Mr Livingstone today said the Mayor had "completely failed on housing". He vowed to revolutionise London housing with his plans for a new lettings agency. "What London needs is a London-wide, non-profit lettings agency. I want to end the churn-and-burn approach of some of the private letting agents. Renting has become a big rip-off that preys on the desperation of Londoners not in a position
to buy."
Thousands at risk
Thousands are at risk of losing their homes, research showed today. Nearly one out of every 100 households faces the threat of eviction by a landlord or mortgage lender, says homelessness charity Shelter. The top 12 local authorities with the highest risk rates are all in London boroughs. Barking and Dagenham top the list.
