Labour's Lammy hints at City Hall bid

David Lammy today hinted that he wants to run for mayor of London as he attacked the state of the Labour Party.

The Tottenham MP, pictured, delivered a lecture on the London riots at LSE and later used a question and answer session to suggest he is interested in succeeding Ken Livingstone as Labour's City Hall candidate.

He said: "The future in politics is not solely in my hands. It's in the hands of my party. It's in the hands of others. So we will see. We will see what the future brings."

He risked the wrath of his party's whips by skipping a key Commons vote on the welfare Bill to deliver the wide-ranging speech.

"The truth is the Labour Party needs to rediscover what it's like to be a movement again," he said.

"It's not just about the leader, it's about the thousands of people standing behind the leader." Mr Lammy was elected in 2000.
