Mayor reveals details (and wages) of his key advisers

Boris Johnson today delivered on a key election promise by publishing the details - including salaries - of his senior team of advisers.

The biographies, job descriptions and register of interests of each of his aides is now available on the Mayor's official website.

He pledged throughout the campaign to make City Hall more open and accountable than it was under his predecessor Ken Livingstone.

The former mayor's regime became increasingly obstructive over revealing information about his inner team of advisers.

However, Mr Johnson has set out the roles and responsibilities of all his staff - including the temporary transition team.

Deputy mayor Richard Barnes, who will technically stand in for his boss in his absence, earns £92,594 for his role.

However his executive counterpart, deputy mayor for government relations Ian Clement, will pick up £124,364 while deputy mayor for young people Ray Lewis is unpaid at present but is expected to receive about the same.

The fourth deputy mayor, Kit Malthouse, will only be paid his Assembly member's salary of £53,543 to run policing. There are still unanswered questions about his status as both an elected official and a member of the executive he is supposed to scrutinise.

Former BBC political correspondent Guto Harri, the Mayor's director of communications, will earn £124,364. He gave up a lucrative position with PR firm Fleishman-Hillard to join Mr Johnson's team. Director of transport Kulveer Ranger will earn £100,000 while director of arts and culture Munira Mirza will receive £80,000. All three roles are politically restricted.

The Mayor also set out details of his two most controversial appointments - Labour MP Kate Hoey and former Westminster council leader Sir Simon Milton.

Vauxhall MP Ms Hoey was accused of disloyalty by many in her party when she agreed to work with the Mayor as an unpaid Commissioner for Sport.

There was still confusion about the status of senior planning aide Sir Simon, who retains a seat on Westminster council.

He is listed as an unpaid consultant, apparently to get round the law which bans serving councillors from senior local government posts. Labour group leader Len Duvall said: "A number of questions remain about the appointment of Simon Milton. If he will be advising the Mayor on major planning issues then he needs to be held to account for that advice, not act as some shadowy backroom figure giving advice in secret.

"In the spirit of openness and transparency the Mayor should clear up this confusion and stop searching for ways round the rules."

Mr Johnson also divulged the identities of his transition team, some of whom will return to Tory headquarters and other jobs, while others will stay on at the GLA. They include acting chief of staff Nick Boles, who will return to Central Office in the next few months to help prepare the Conservatives for government.

He will be joined there by his acting deputy, political strategist James McGrath, who worked with Lynton Crosby during the campaign, and who will help plan the party's strategy to fight the general election.

There is also a list of 12 transitional advisers including his campaign chief of staff Dan Ritterband and campaign press team Katie Perrior and Jo Tanner.

In total, Mr Johnson listed nine permanent staff - who between them will be paid £699,299 - although more appointments are expected.

Mr Livingstone had a core team of eight including chief of staff Simon Fletcher, who was paid £123,776 last year, and seven directors, each paid £117,882. These included former race and policing adviser Lee Jasper and regeneration director Neale Coleman, who is being kept on by Mr Johnson to advise on the Olympics.
