Supporting me is not a waste, says Paddick

Brian Paddick today urged Londoners to vote and promised a ballot cast for him would not be wasted.

The Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate said he was the only real alternative to Ken Livingstone.

But he faced embarrassment as Lib-Dem president Simon Hughes advised the party's backers to use their second preference to vote for Mr Livingstone - undermining Mr Paddick's refusal to endorse a rival.

Mr Hughes said voters should support people with experience of London, adding: "I hope all voters will use the same test to decide their second vote as well.

"Nobody who has not served London and worked for London in the past deserves to have the votes of Londoners or the top political job in London in the future."

Mr Paddick claimed he was the only person who could be tough on crime and lead the capital successfully over the next four years. The former senior police officer also urged Londoners to make sure they voted to stop extremist parties, such as the BNP, from gaining a seat on the London Assembly.

He said: "I have promised Londoners that I will cut crime and if I do not match my pledge I will resign from office after the first four years.

"I will not only be tough on crime. I am also committed to reducing the city's carbon footprint, to making London's transport safer, cleaner and greener and increase the housing stock while making it easier for first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder."

Mr Paddick voted at his local polling station in Vauxhall at 8am today. He was then having a lastminute push in Richmond, Ealing and Brent this morning before moving on to Wood Green and Islington.
