Sir Paul left his London office last night to be with his family in Manchester. His youngest daughter Rebecca is understood to be devastated.
Her 25-year-old boyfriend, Harry Wilmers, was cycling in the Old Trafford area before the crash at about1pm yesterday. He died in hospital a short time later.
Local police today appealed for witnesses to the accident in which the 30-year-old lorry driver was uninjured. A Met source said today: "The Commissioner is obviously completely devastated. He knew the boyfriend very well. The whole family is in deep shock."
A Met spokeswoman said: "This is a tragic accident but it is a private family matter."
Sir Paul has three grown-up daughters. The family home, which he shares with his wife Lynda, is in Lancashire where he grew up and where he was chief constable before moving to London. The couple spend their week in London while Sir Paul has said in interviews that he tries to get back to Lancashire one weekend in every three.
