Met moves gang members to 'safe houses'

London gang members are being given refuge in a national network of "safe houses" in a radical scheme to combat youth violence.

More than 10 gangsters have so far been housed by Scotland Yard and helped with education and jobs to give them a "new life". The Metropolitan Police is preparing to expand the controversial US-style scheme, which protects young men and teenagers from the influences gang life, and violent reprisals.

All the gang members given safe houses so far have asked for help, but in future the police are expected to approach gangsters to offer them a fresh start.

Police admit the scheme is expensive but say it will help save lives and cut violent crime.

The idea comes as a record number of teenagers are being murdered in London - last year 27 youngsters were killed in stabbings and shootings in the capital, many gang-related.

Commander Shaun Sawyer, head of Scotland Yard's Violent Crime Directorate, said: "We are providing safe houses to a small number of gang members who want to break away from associates and friends.

"This could mean moving them to another part of the borough or another city. We offer them employment and education opportunities."

In an interview with Esquire magazine he added: "A lot of kids say they want to get out, but don't know how to. Safe houses provide them with some breathing space."

A recent Met report identified 171 gangs in London with a combined strength of an estimated 5,000 members.
