Met rapped over honour killing victim

Police were severely criticised today for a series of blunders in the way they investigated complaints from a woman who was murdered by her family in an "honour killing".

Seven Metropolitan Police officers are singled out for criticism over the way they handled complaints from 20-year-old Banaz Mahmod before her murder. Two face disciplinary action and the potential sack from the force.

Two other officers from West Midlands police are also criticised.

Miss Mahmod's father, uncle and cousin were jailed for life at the Old Bailey last year after being convicted of her killing.

Mahmod Mahmod, 52, was told he would serve 20 years for hiring a gang of Kurdish thugs to murder his daughter. His brother, Ari Mahmod, 51, a businessman, planned the killing and Mohamad Hama, 31, was jailed for a minimum of 17 years for strangling Miss Mahmod at her home in Mitcham.

The men decided that Miss Mahmod should be tortured, raped and murdered to restore "honour" on their family name and serve as a lesson.

IPCC Commissioner Nicola Williams said: "Banaz Mahmod was a young woman who lost her life in terrible circumstances.

"It is clear that the police response was at best mixed. In relation to two incidents we have found that Banaz Mahmod was let down by the service she received."

Diana Nammi, the director of the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation, said: "The police officers involved could have saved her life."
