Sergio Villarreal Barragan, a leader of the Beltran Leyva cartel and one of the country's most-wanted fugitives, was arrested in the central state of Puebla.

"This is a new and resounding blow against crime, given the high rank and dangerousness of this person inside one of the country's most extensive criminal organisations which has now been deeply weakened," said government spokesman Alejandro Poire.

In December soldiers killed the cartel's leader Arturo Beltran Leyva, then in July Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, the organisation's number three, was shot dead. In the same month, police captured Edgar Valdez Villarreal, alias La Barbie, a leader of the cartel and its hitman. The two men are not related.

More than 28,000 people have been killed in Mexico since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon launched a military offensive against the cartels.
