Miliband admits handing EU power
05 July 2007
He told MPs that the treaty, which paved the way for the European single currency, was "smaller" than the current EU blueprint. However ministers are claiming the blueprint is merely a "tidying up exercise".
Mr Miliband's remarks were seized upon by the Tories who said he had let slip the real scale of the resurrected constitution, agreed in Brussels last month.
They stepped up calls for Gordon Brown to honour Labour's pledge two years ago to allow the British people a say in a referendum.
During Mr Miliband's first Foreign Office Questions in the Commons on Tuesday, Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "If there is no referendum on the revived EU constitution, he will never be able to use the words 'honour' and 'trust' with any credibility again."
The Foreign Secretary reminded Mr Hague that "when he first entered this House, he worked with 11 other members of the current Shadow Cabinet and 22 current Conservative frontbenchers to vote against a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty, which involved a smaller transfer of power."
The 1992 Maastricht Treaty led to the creation of the current union and paved the way for the euro and proposed a Common Foreign and Security Policy.
The constitution, agreed by Tony Blair as one of his last acts as Premier, will see Britain surrender 60 national vetoes on EU legislation, including energy policy, transport and an EU diplomatic service.
