Missing: The £250-a-week dishwasher accidentally paid £8,200 by his hotel

Bosses at one of Britain's exclusive hotels are suing a Polish dishwasher who disappeared after they mistakenly overpaid him by more than £8,000.

Konrad Duptuch has not been seen at One Aldwych since the London hotel transferred £8,238.97 into his bank account in June this year. Staff in the kitchens where Mr Duptuch worked normally earn about £250 a week.

If Mr Duptuch had continued to be paid at his unexpectedly inflated weekly rate, he would have ended up earning about £416,000 a year - a rise of more than £3,200 a week.

Kitchen staff earn as little as £13,000 a year

Now the owners of the £1,500-a-night London hotel, where Sadie Frost and Jude Law spent their wedding night, have issued a High Court writ against Mr Duptuch, saying they have tried unsuccessfully to contact him and he has not repaid the money.

Bosses at the hotel - also frequented by Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman - want their former employee to repay not only the money mistakenly paid to him but also the interest that it could have earned.

But one of his former colleagues commented: "What would you do if you spent every day washing rich people's dishes and then suddenly you went to the cashpoint and found you has eight grand in your account? I'd be off."

Mr Duptuch, who is thought to be in his 20s, has not been seen at the hotel since the money was paid into his bank account. He apparently failed to turn up for work one day and did not give any notice he was leaving.

One Aldwych where hotel guests can pay £1,500 a night

A man speaking at the house where Mr Duptuch lived in East London said he thought he may have returned to Eastern Europe, but claimed to know nothing of the court proceedings.

Papers lodged at the High Court by solicitors Simons Muirhead & Burton indicate the hotel mistakenly transferred £8,238.97 into Mr Duptuch's bank account on June 5 this year.

One Aldwych regularly features in top-ten lists. It is situated in the heart of London, just off the Strand and near Covent Garden, in a striking historic building.

It has its own cinema, houses a private art collection of more than 350 paintings and sculptures, and has 103 luxurious bedrooms including unique circular suites.

There are two restaurants and it is in the kitchen of one of these - The Axis - that Mr Duptuch worked.

A hotel spokesman said: "I can confirm we are in dispute with a former employee but because the matter is undergoing litigation, I cannot comment further."

It is thought that if the hotel bosses are successful in their legal action, they will attempt to take the money, or any of it that is left, back out of Mr Duptuch's account.
