Monkeys cloned for first time

Scientists have created cloned embryos from adult monkeys for the first time, bringing the prospect of human cloning closer.

The new microscopic technique, performed on a male rhesus macaque aged 10, involves fusing an egg with a nucleus taken from an adult monkey's skin cell.

It is set to revolutionise the efficiency by which human eggs can be turned into cloned embryos.

Shoukhrat Mitalipov led the work at the Oregon National Primate Research Centre.
