Montessori to open state primary school in 'disadvantaged area of London'

Parents will soon be able to send their children to London's first Montessori state primary school under plans outlined today.

The alternative education movement already has a national network of 700 private schools and nurseries.

The Montessori Schools Association now wants to expand further into state education to bring its methods to some of London's poorest communities.

Philip Bujak, chief executive of the Montessori Schools Association, told the Standard: "We are planning stages to open a bespoke primary school within a disadvantaged area of London in the next two or three years, regardless of who is in Government."

It would be the first time that the association had opened an entirely new school and gifted it to a local council.

Four state schools across England have already converted to teaching the Montessori method.
