Monty Panesar leaves Labour in a spin over dinner snub
13 July 2007
Monty Panesar has left Labour in a spin
The cricketer's name was included in an initial list of sport stars due to appear at the dinner at Wembley last night. However, Panesar withdrew his name from the list of supporters of the celebrity gathering.
His agent Mike Martin said: "We did not know anything about it and looked at his schedule and he was unable to do the event regardless of whether it was political or not."
Umpire Dickie Bird, who was also invited, said: "Raising money for Labour was never mentioned."
The event looked to raise £500,000 for the party in the wake of the cash-for-peerages affair, which left the party about £20 million in debt.
