Mother: DNA policy caused son's suicide

The mother of an innocent man whose details were placed on the national DNA database has blamed the policy for driving him to suicide.

Robert Chong, 41, was arrested by an offduty policeman at Waterloo station in May and forced to provide a genetic sample after a woman falsely claimed he had exposed himself.

The wood machinist from Hendon was left "traumatised" and worried his inclusion on the register would prevent him moving abroad for work.

His mother, Josephine Chong, said her son became increasingly concerned about the arrest and never received a letter from police telling him they were going to drop the case.

She saw Mr Chong alive for the last time on the morning of 11 July, coming home to find a note from him saying: "I can't face life any more." His body was found hanging in a local park.

Mrs Chong said: "The database should be for criminals, not the innocent. You are meant to be innocent until proven guilty in this country."

An inquest is due in November.
