Mother of boy killed by car's electric window tells of her 'heartbreak'

The devastated mother of a boy killed after trapping his neck in a car's electric window told how her son "brought a smile to everyone who knew him".

Five-year-old Michael Dury choked to death after getting caught between the window and the frame of the Ford Escort.

His mother, Wendy Broughton, had left the youngster and his three-year-old brother, Jonathan, playing in her car for less than five minutes.

Yesterday, surrounded by her son's toys at the family home in Croydon, Surrey, the heartbroken 29-year-old described her grief of at the loss of the little boy who had been so full of life.

She said: "Michael was a very lovable, healthy and happy child who always brought a smile to everyone who knew him.

"He enjoyed everything in life, especially going to work with his dad, and helping with his work as a builder and playing computer games.

"Michael recently had a family had a family day out at Legoland where he loved going on the cars and getting a pretend driving licence.

"He was happy listening to music with his mummy and family and he enjoyed dancing with the living the room."

Mother-of-four Miss Broughton, a sales worker, is believed to have left the keys in the ignition of the 11-year-old car when she went into her home on Wednesday morning, which meant the electric windows were working.

Neighbours heard a scream as Michael and Jonathan played in the vehicle, but assumed they were messing about.

Moments later Miss Broughton rushed out to the car and frantically tried to revive Michael before carrying his body into her house.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene, but paramedics were unable to resuscitate the boy.

Michael's father, builder Paul Dury, 30, who is engaged to Miss Broughton, said: "We're heartbroken.

"I asked the police to take the car away. None of us could bear to look at it."
