Mountain rescue for medical students

Three London medical students were rescued from Mount Snowdon after becoming stuck in near-freezing temperatures.

The trio, who live and study in the capital, had attempted to tackle the 3,560ft Welsh peak wearing trainers and casual trousers.

They found themselves trapped as 60mph winds lashed around them and one showed symptoms of hypothermia. They have been criticised by rescuers for going up the mountain under-prepared.

The friends set off early yesterday from their base camp along the popular Pyg Track and reached 2,500 feet before suffering the effects of the cold as they tried to make it through thick cloud.

They used a mobile phone to make an emergency call to the local mountain rescue team at 2pm. It took a team of 20 volunteers four-and-a-half hours to bring down the three.

One was taken off the mountain by stretcher and taken to Bangor hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia. Hospital sister Gill Williams said: "One of them was admitted to our emergency department but was discharged later in the evening. He was very cold and wet."

Local residents said such rescues were now commonplace as increasing numbers of people try to tackle the peak without the proper clothing and equipment.

Last night the students refused to return phone calls so they could explain how they became stuck.

A spokesman for Llanberis Mountain Rescue said: "They were in waterproof jackets but were otherwise woefully equipped.

"They had no waterproof trousers, were in trainers, and had taken no notice of a forecast of severe weather.

"Two were able to walk down with assistance from the team, but the third was very cold and had to be carried by stretcher."

He added: "Visitors should remember that even if there is no snow on the mountains it is winter and very cold up there. It is vital to be properly clad."
