MPs back memorial for heroes

16 January 2008
A petition has been started on the Downing Street website, a Facebook group has been set up and an Early Day Motion signed by 27 MPs has been tabled in Parliament.
The movement was started by former Mayoral candidate Lee Rotherham with the backing of Tory MP Mark Field, whose constituency includes Trafalgar Square.
The Commons motion tabled by Mr Field says: "That this House supports the Downing Street petition for a combined high-profile memorial for recipients of the George Cross and Victoria Cross, believes that a more public monument would provide an iconic reminder of selfless action in an age desperately seeking role models and suggests that one place worthy of consideration to honour society's heroes in both peace and war may be the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square."
Nearly 600 people have joined the Victoria Cross/George Cross National Memorial Campaign g roup on Facebook and 200 have signed the petition at www.petitions.pm.gov.uk/ VC-GC-Memorial.
The fourth plinth was built in 1841 and was originally intended for use as the base for an equestrian statue. It stood empty for years until, in 1999, it was chosen as a temporary location for art.
Six artists, including Tracey Emin and Antony Gormley, are currently bidding for the chance to provide the next sculpture, with their ideas on display at the National Gallery. The winner will be announced in the spring for installation next year.
Previous works include a Christ-like figure by Mark Wallinger and the plinth on a plinth by Rachel Whiteread. The space is currently occupied by Model For A Hotel 2007 by Thomas Sch¸tte.
